HOUSTON – Police say four women captured on camera stealing hair extensions were identified after they reportedly tried to use social media to sell the products.
The hair heist was captured on surveillance camera on Sept. 16 at a shop called Mr. Indian Hair located on Almeda in south Houston.
The shop’s owner Kehlin Farooq said the products he carries are in high demand.
“You have so many celebrities wearing this type of hair now, and a lot of women want that look,” he said.
Farooq said a bundle of human hair costs between $150-$200.
“The average woman wears three for a full head,” he said.
It’s a lucrative business, which is why he is not surprised thieves targeted his store. The surveillance video shows four women walking into the store and talking with the lone employee.
Farooq said they asked his employee, his niece, about a piece of hair that wasn’t on the floor.
“They knew exactly what they were doing,” he said.
When the employee walked to the back of the store, the video shows three of the women grab several hangers of hair while the fourth woman is seen running out to drive the getaway car.
Farooq said between $15,000 and $20,000 dollars worth of hair was taken.
Despite having surveillance video, he couldn’t identify the thieves. But days later, there was a break in the case thanks to some Good Samaritans who told him his products were being sold on the street and on Instagram.
That tip helped police identify the four suspects.
Gayle Quoquisia and Sherrel Hadnot were arrested. Police are still looking for Alisa Flannagan and Jameisha Kennon.
All face a felony theft charge.
“When you steal from us, you’re stealing from a lot of people who depend on small businesses,” Farooq said.
Farooq said he has stepped up security at his store and is now working to recoup his loss.
