Three people were hospitalized after a northbound Amtrak train struck two vehicles Thursday afternoon in Sorrento Valley, according to San Diego police and fire officials.
Officials received a call just after 3 p.m. that a semi-truck on the tracks was struck by an Amtrak Surfliner train near Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Sorrento Valley Road, according to Rick Ballard, Battalion Chief with San Diego Fire-Rescue.
Officials were not yet clear as to how one other vehicle was hit by the train and another sustained damage. The reason why the semi-truck was on the tracks had also yet to be determined.
Two of the vehicle’s drivers and the train’s engineer sustained minor injuries and were transported to an area hospital.
No one aboard the Surfliner was injured and officials were going to transfer the passengers to another train, according to Ballard.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s department was investigating the accident.
