You now have to be 21 to purchase cigarettes in New York City
The Big Apple has already put the kibosh on trans fats (and is still trying to nix giant sugary sodas), but now it's putting on its nanny pants once again to wag its finger at young smokers. New York City has become the first major American city to raise the minimum age from 18 to 21 to buy all tobacco products. Cigars, cigarettes and even e-cigarettes that deliver nicotine in a vapor can only be purchased by those of legal drinking age. The city's mayor and resident sourpuss Michael Bloomberg said in a statement, "We know that tobacco dependence can begin very soon after a young person first tries smoking, so it's critical that we stop young people from smoking before they ever start." Because, as we know, telling a teenager not to do something is a bulletproof plan to prevent them from doing it.
