Tessanne Chin's exciting performance on NBC's The Voice Monday night doing reggae hit ‘Underneath it all’, by No Doubt, had the obviously pleased studio audience rocking.
Tessanne had the audience on their feet, especially throughout Lady Saw's deejaying portion of the hit song. The judges’ comments were purely commendable. Tessanne’s rendition was a hit.
However, Rolling Stone Magazine has other ideas. A report on rollingstone.com, described Tessanne's performance as experimental, claiming coach Adam [Levine] has turned Chin and teammate James Wolpert into guinea pigs.
"The rest of Team Adam didn't fare as well though, as the experimental coach turned James Wolpert and Tessanne Chin into musical guinea pigs. Apparently Adam hasn't learned any lessons from season after losing season," the article said.
"Giving powerhouse vocalist Tessanne No Doubt's reggae-tinged ‘Underneath It All’ could go either way when the votes roll in, as Tessanne's accent was more on display than her vocal abilities. So, now the question is: Will viewers embrace the blatant nod at her Jamaican roots or are they tired of being reminded? According to Adam, the song was "tailor-made" for her and he was "overjoyed to be able to tie Jamaica to America." But he could soon be mumbling "I hate this country" again if she gets cut," Rolling Stones added.
For their part Entertainment Weekly said: "Tessanne says she wants to show her "fun side" with this song choice. Adam wants her Jamaican heritage to start colouring her performances. On the stage, which by the way looked like a quasi Miami open-air nightclub, we definitely saw more of Tessanne's casual singer side, with the spoken word, ‘reggae breakdown’ bit. While I think Tessanne is a massive talent, and consistently powerhouse-worthy, she hasn't really given us a showstopper in the way that James and Matthew have thus far. And this performance wasn't it, either. I wanted to hear a lilting, more stripped-down version of her voice in the verses, but what we got was more diva, more of the same."
The Hollywood Reporter noted that Chin could win the competition without overplaying her Jamaican cards.
"Chin returned to her roots with the reggae influence of No Doubt’s ‘Underneath It All’, complete with original phrasing, accent-heavy rapping and an unexpected yet very welcome call-and-response conclusion. [CeLo] Green applauded how well she applied criticism from the coaches, while Aguilera said she'd finally heard something she was searching for, and got to know the singer much better.
“We loved the performance as well but don’t understand why these two coaches were praising Chin's inherent Jamaican-ness and asked her to show it more with Aguilera’s reggae rendition of ‘What a Girl Wants’.
“ Her voice has proven to stretch farther than any region-specific sound, and she can seize the crown without relying on cultural gimmicks," a report on www.hollywoodreporter.com said.
The remaining eight Voice contenders will be reduced to six tonight during the live results show. Voting closed at 11:00 am Tuesday.
