Justin Bieber has reportedly splashed out thousands on his birthday celebrations.

The Canadian star turned 20 on March 1 and apparently decided to treat his friends and family to a lavish holiday.

Justin is rumoured to have jetted a group of people to a beach resort on the Bahamas, where villas cost around $4,275 a night.

According to TMZ, Justin and his loved ones have been staying at five star The Cove, which is on the Caribbean island of Eleuthera.

Among those who enjoyed the break were the star's mother and father Pattie and Jeremy and his friends Lil Za and Khalil.

The villas are lavish, with each boasting butlers, its own swimming pool and kitchens.

Apparently the group flew in to the Bahamas before taking a private yacht to the resort. Justin's birthday fell on Saturday and was celebrated with a party on the boat.

The star was deluged with happy birthday messages from fans, with some even decorating the security gates of his home in Atlanta with balloons.

The singer appeared touched by the love he'd been shown on his special day and took to Twitter to thank people.

"Thanks to everyone for all the birthday wishes. Means a lot. Blessed and hoping we can continue to change the world together. Thanks (sic)," he wrote on Twitter.

On Sunday, he wrote he was "keeping the party going" on the social networking site.

It seems his special day may have put Justin in a reflective mood. While many people were focused on who won the big prizes at Sunday night's Oscars yesterday, he posted a picture of his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez attending the famed Vanity Fair after-party on Sunday.

"Most elegant princess in the world," he captioned the shot, which showed Selena in a gold beaded gown by Emilio Pucci which featured cut-out detail down the front.

The bash has special significance for Justin and Selena, as it was one of the first red carpets they attended together in 2011.
