A Syrian army commander who led the assault on rebels held up in a famed Crusader castle says his men killed 93 of the opposition fighters as they fled to neighboring Lebanon.
The commander said Friday that the slain rebels were part of a group of 300 who government troops ousted the day before from Crac des Chevaliers, a UNESCO World Heritage site in central Syria.
He did not say how many were killed in the several hours of fighting it took to take the castle.
The commander spoke to reporters on a government tour of the site. He didn't give his name in line with regulations.
Rebels had controlled the Crac since 2012. Damage from multiple rounds of fighting and bombardment was visible, including collapsed walls and staircases.
