England's long-awaited World Cup song for the 2014 competition is finally here. Whether it will inspire England's squad onto glory, though, is quite another matter!
England have a very tough group to get through first. They play their opener against Italy on June 14th followed by in-form Uruguay five days later, then they play what is their easiest tie on paper against Costa Rica on June 24th ' in what could well be their last match of the campaign.
England are currently around 33-1 in the betting market to win the World Cup.
But they must finish in the top two to qualify for the knockout stages and are currently third favourites to do so with Betfair behind Italy and Uruguay. There isn't much to choose between the latter two in the betting, though, so will England's World Cup song be just enough to see them through? 'Probably not' is the short answer ' though there's time yet or more of a rousing anthem to come from another source for the England fans making the trip to Brazil this summer.
And the song isn't all that bad ' but it's not great either.
It features Gary Lineker with Gary Barlow and a number of well-known singers and footballers coming together to make a cover version of Take That's "Greatest Day" song. And it was released in aid of Sport Relief.
Ex England players Peter Shilton, Glenn Hoddle, Michael Owen, and Sir Geoff Hurst were all part of a line-up of 20 well-known faces in making the cover. The song follows a mixed bag of previous attempts from the sublime 'World in Motion" from New Order for Italia World Cup 90, to the slightly ridiculous Ant and Dec 2002 "We're On The Ball" and the still excellent "Back Home" from 1970. England fans will be hoping their team won't be back home too early this summer though!
