After months of speculation, Nick Cannon has confirmed that he and his Grammy Award-winning wife, Mariah Carey are separated and in the process of getting a divorce. Despite their marital troubles, Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey are making their family “the number one priority” this holiday season.
Cannon addressed the issue on Good Morning America on Monday, and though he confirmed the couple’s separation, he went on to say that he and Carey won’t let their split take a toll on their 3-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, when it comes to Christmas. High-profile and celebrity divorce attorney, Benjamin Hodas, says this is an ideal start to any divorce proceeding.
“If you can get the two parties to put egos and emotions to the side it makes any divorce easier. Misguided emotions are the number one reason divorce gets messy and becomes a long drawn out affair,” says Hodas. He stresses celebrity divorces are not all that different from the average divorces.
While there may be more assets to divvy up and a big spotlight on them, there is still a life-altering process that two parties have to go through. “This will be in the public eye and the rumor wheel will probably be churning out a lot of stories but both parties need to remember their original goal and to keep their children at the forefront,” says Hodas.
