The family of Avonte Oquendo, the autistic 14-year-old who went missing from his Long Island City school in October, plans to sue the city of New York.
Last Thursday, a decomposed torso, left arm, legs and a sneaker and clothes similar to those worn by Avonte when he went missing were found on a northern Queens beach. A skull and teeth were found over the weekend. And on Tuesday, the family got the news they never wanted to hear — those remains belonged to Avonte.
Attorney David Perecman said he will file the wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the family. The announcement comes three months after the family said they would sue the city over claims Avonte was not supervised properly when he slipped out of the school.
As for Avonte’s mother, Vanessa Fontaine, Perecman said she is inconsolable.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Fontaine and the rest of Avonte’s family. May he finally rest in peace.
