Retired NYPD Cop Allegedly Shoots Wife 10 Times In Front Of Their Children

Two children are left to mourn the death of their mother after witnessing their father shoot her in cold blood.

According to the New York Daily News, retired NYPD cop Kevin Canty, 43, has confessed to firing 10 shots at his wife, Jessica Mera Canty, 40, in front of their two children on Saturday morning. Prosecutors say that the shooting followed an argument that occurred between Mera and Canty after he accused her of having an affair with another cop.

“I’m sorry,” Canty reportedly told a detective as he was transported to a nearby precinct for questioning.

“I love my wife. She was cheating on me,” he later expressed at his Easter Sunday arraignment. “I know I’m going to jail,” he reportedly said.

Neighbors say that he was forced to retire last year due to anger and depression and issues, adding that he once threatened to kill his entire family. The shooting occurred at the couple’s South Ozone home, where he allegedly called his wife a “whore” and fired multiple rounds from a  9-mm pistol, striking Mera in the upper chest, breast, armpit, stomach and arm. The couple’s children, who witnessed the shooting, ran out of the home into a nearby store screaming, “Daddy shot Mommy!”

The family’s neighbor Daniel Farrell tells reporters that he witnessed Canty chasing the children down the street following the shooting. Farrell adds that on multiple occasions over the past few weeks Mera showed up at his doorstep saying that her husband was drunk and was going to kill her. Another neighbor, who requested not to be identified, said that the couple could frequently be overheard arguing and fighting.

“We tried to block it out, because it’s a common thing,” the neighbor said.

Canty has been charged with second-degree murder and faces 25 years to life if convicted.
