We knew Ginuwine‘s marriage to Sole, his wife of 11 years was on the rocks but we had no idea they were headed for divorce. Earlier this week, Ginuwine’s lawyer, Bruce Beckner, exposed the impending divorce during a pretrial hearing over unpaid royalties to Robert Reives, the executive producer of Ginuwine’s debut album. Apparently Robert is seeking $250,000 in back royalties from the soul singer’s five-album deal with Sony, reports the Washington Post.
“Mr. Lumpkin is very close to declaring bankruptcy,” Beckner said in court. “He owes my firm a ton of money and a bunch of other people a ton of money. He owes Uncle Sam 300-odd thousand dollars in back income taxes,” he added. News of Ginuwine’s financial woes and flailing marriage shocked fans when it hit the Internet. The “Pony” singer took to Instagram to respond to the chatter:
“I need to address yesterday’s rumour because it is not totally accurate and I don’t want my wife being made out to be the bad guy here. We are NOT yet divorced, but we ARE currently separated and working towards coming to our own agreement, without lawyers, to amicably and fairly divorce. We’ve kept it quiet because it is really no ones business but ours and our family’s. Therefore, reports that she left me “broke” are untrue. She has been a good wife and mother and my poor choices and actions over many years have lead to this. I am on a path of becoming a better man and part of that is taking responsibility for my own choices and behavior in life, so that’s what I’m doing by releasing this statement. I thank everyone who has been there for us through these trying times. You are appreciated. God bless.”
Ginuwine has been allegedly struggling behind-the-scenes with an alcohol problem. Earlier this year, he posted a photo of his daughter playing with money with a caption that implied she had stripped for the cash. Sole responded, “I’ve remained silent but my child will not be publicly humiliated by a sick joke be some1 who’s judgment is impaired.”
