Man charged for smoking ganja pleads not guilty, said he ate it

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Laughter erupted in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court Friday after a man arrested for smoking ganja told the court that he was not guilty of smoking the weed because he had eaten it.
Sarjie Morgan was brought before the court following a police report that he had been smoking ganja.

However, on Friday when the prosecutor asked him what was his plea to smoking ganja he quickly replied, “I am guilty of eating the ganja.”
“What you mean by you are guilty of eating the ganja,” Magistrate Grace Henry-McKenzie questioned amidst laughter from the court.
“I saw them coming and by the time them reach me I eat it,” he answered.
The magistrate then told him that based on his response she was going to set the matter for trial. But Morgan quickly changed his position telling the judge that he would plead guilty instead as he did not want to case to continue.
He was then ordered to pay $2,000 or serve 30 days in jail.
